When a bomb exploded under Dan Luckett's Army Humvee in Iraq two years ago — blowing off one of his legs and part of his other foot — the first thing he thought was: "That's it. You're done. No more Army for you."
But two years later, the 27-year-old Norcross, Georgia, native is back on duty — a double-amputee fighting on the front lines of America's Afghan surge in one of the most dangerous parts of this volatile country.
Luckett's remarkable recovery can be attributed in part to dogged self-determination. But technological advances have been crucial: Artificial limbs today are so effective, some war-wounded like Luckett are not only able to do intensive sports like snow skiing, they can return to active duty as fully operational soldiers. The Pentagon says 41 American amputee veterans are now serving in combat zones worldwide.
Luckett was a young platoon leader on his first tour in Iraq when an explosively formed penetrator — a bomb that hurls an armor-piercing lump of molten copper — ripped through his vehicle on a Baghdad street on Mother's Day 2008.
His Humvee cabin instantly filled with heavy gray smoke and the smell of burning diesel and molten metal. Luckett felt an excruciating pain and a "liquid" — his blood — pouring out of his legs. He looked down and saw a shocking site: his own left foot sheered off above the ankle and his right boot a bloody mangle of flesh and dust

Don't Cry , I will Come again in this world not to kill other but give life others.

The soldier, from 2nd Battalion, The Duke of Lancaster's Regiment, was shot in southern Afghanistan on 23 August.
The 22-year-old, from Bolton, died in hospital on Friday.
Kingsman Deady's family, who were with him when he died at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, said he fought to make a difference.
The death brought the total number of British military personnel killed in Afghanistan since the conflict began to 335.
Kingsman Deady joined the army in 2008 and was based in Cyprus before he was sent to Afghanistan.
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) said he was helping to protect a "vital location" in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand when his unit came under "prolonged, intense small arms and rocket propelled grenade fire".

Kingsman Deady was an old fashioned Kingsman - wiry, tough, humorous, never afraid to voice his opinion”
End Quote Captain Bowden Williams The Duke of Lancaster's Regiment
Kingsman Deady was fatally wounded and given first aid by comrades which kept him alive, the MoD said.
His family were present when he died.
They said in a statement: "Darren was proud to do a job that he loved and most of all believed in.
"His little brother once turned round to him and asked him, 'Why do you fight?'
"Darren simply replied, 'To make a difference'."
The statement concluded: "There is only one thing left to say now - please don't forget him."
Lt Col Robbie Boyd, his commanding officer, said: "Kingsman Darren Deady was a tiny man with the heart of a lion.
"No one in my battalion was as good or as accurate with a grenade launcher - he fired it time and again on two separate tours to protect the team he was ferociously loyal to

Bush was wrong about benefits of the war

The cost of direct US military operations - not even including long-term costs such as taking care of wounded veterans - already exceeds the cost of the 12-year war in Vietnam and is more than double the cost of the Korean War.

War Funding, Not For Peace

As if the Gulf weren’t enough, the White House now faces a spill of its own making in Congress this week, infuriating old Democratic allies and putting a hold on new war funding sought by President Barack Obama.
Talks were under way Tuesday to extricate the administration by coming up with offsets to pay for new education assistance to avert teacher layoffs this fall. At the same time, renewed efforts began to salvage a $24 billion package of state Medicaid assistance, even if it means paring back a proposed 18-month fix of Medicare reimbursements for physicians.

The backdrop in both cases is a Saturday night letter from Obama calling for action on education and Medicaid assistance but giving no direction on how to pay for them — or how to win support in a deficit-conscious Congress. Leaked in advance to the Sunday newspapers, the letter caught party leaders by surprise, and with Obama largely absent from both fights to date, it was widely seen by Democrats as more political showmanship at their expense by the administration.

'the war to end all wars'

Every  American at least $850 in military and reconstruction costs since October 2001.
In Next  five years, These wars will cost nearly $1.4 trillion, calculates Linda Bilmes, who teaches budgeting at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. That's nearly $4,745 per capita. Her estimate is thorough. She includes not only the military cost but also such things as veterans' benefits and additional interest on the federal debt.

That's in money, not in blood and tears. Fatalities from the combined Afghanistan-Iraq conflict now exceed 2,000. American participation in 1917-18 in World War I, a war infamous for its trench-warfare slaughter, resulted in 53,513 US deaths

Afghanistan and Iraq set to cost more than Vietnam and Korea

President George Bush will have spent more than $1 trillion on military adventures by the time he leaves office at the end of next year, more than the entire amount spent on the Korean and Vietnam wars combined.
There are also disturbing signs that Mr Bush is preparing an attack on Iran during his remaining months in office. He has demanded $46bn (£22.5bn) emergency funds from Congress by Christmas and included with it a single sentence requesting money to upgrade the B-2 "stealth" bomber.

The Iraq War (also known as the Occupation of Iraq, the Second Gulf War, and Operation Iraqi Freedom) is a military campaign that began on March 20, 2003, with the invasion of Iraq by a multinational force led by troops from the United States and the United Kingdom. The last U.S. combat brigade left Iraq on August 19, 2010. On August 31, U.S. president Barack Obama declared an end to combat operations. Approximately 50,000 U.S. troops still remain in the country in an "advise and assist" capacity.

To date, $1.09 trillion dollars have been allocated to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The national, state, and local numbers we provide are based on the total approved amounts through the end of Fiscal Year 2010 including the FY10 supplemental.
These appropriations do not include requested funds for FY2011. When Congress completes their budget process in the Fall, we will adjust the counters with new amounts that will count to the end of FY2011.
If you should compare the amount displayed on the numbers in our information sheets with the Cost of War counter, please note that the information sheets include all war spending approved to date, the same number that the counter will reach at the end of the 2010 fiscal year

Civilian deaths in “noble” Iraq mission pass 10,000

 Introduction

As many as 10,000 non-combatant civilian deaths during 2003 have been reliably reported so far as a result of the US/UK-led invasion and occupation of Iraq . These reports provide figures which range between a minimum of 8,235 and a maximum of 10,079 as of Saturday 7th February 2004.

IBC’s experience of data-gathering throughout the preceding year shows that reports of additional deaths often continue to emerge many months after the event. Many civilian deaths are almost certainly, as yet, unreported, and even the current IBC maximum cannot be considered to approach a complete and final toll of innocent deaths during 2003.
